The Power of Canine Blood Donation
Just like humans, dogs can experience injuries or illnesses that require life-saving blood transfusions. The demand for canine blood is constantly increasing, and volunteer donors are essential to meet this need. By enrolling your dog in the UF Small Animal Hospital’s Canine Blood Donor Program, you can help save the lives of other dogs.
Is Your Dog Eligible to Donate?

Eligible Dogs
Your dog must meet the following eligibility requirements to participate in this program:
– 1-5 years old
– 40+ pounds
– Excellent temperament
– Neutered male or spayed female
– Willing to have neck shaved for blood withdrawal

Non-Eligible Dogs
Your dog is NOT eligible to participate in this program if:
– Has received blood transfusion(s)
– Has health condition/chronic illness, or history of cancer
– On medications (other than preventatives)
– History of a blood borne parasite
– Pregnant or history of pregnancy
– Has had a splenectomy
Donation Process
Before enrollment, your dog will undergo a thorough health screening to ensure they can donate safely. This includes a physical exam, blood tests, and screening for infectious diseases.
Blood is collected from the jugular vein in the neck. A small area will be shaved and cleaned before collection. During the a 10-minute procedure, your dog will relax comfortably on a table while receiving plenty of praise and pets. No sedation is used.
After donating, your dog will receive a temporary bandage, along with treats, food, and a toy as a thank-you.
Dogs weighing at least 40 pounds can safely donate a half pint of blood every 4–6 weeks. Dogs weighing more than 50 pounds can donate a full pint every 8 weeks.
