The Power of Canine Blood Donation

Just like humans, dogs can experience injuries or illnesses that require life-saving blood transfusions. The demand for canine blood is constantly increasing, and volunteer donors are essential to meet this need. By enrolling your dog in the UF Small Animal Hospital’s Canine Blood Donor Program, you can help save the lives of other dogs.

Is Your Dog Eligible to Donate?

Your dog must meet the following eligibility requirements to participate in this program:

  • 1-5 years old
  • 40+ pounds
  • Excellent temperament
  • Neutered male or spayed female
  • Willing to have neck shaved for blood withdrawal

Before enrollment, your dog will undergo a thorough health screening to ensure they can donate safely. This includes a physical exam, blood tests, and screening for infectious diseases.

Your dog is NOT eligible to participate in this program if:

  • Has received blood transfusion(s)
  • Has health condition/chronic illness, or history of cancer
  • On medications (other than preventatives)
  • History of a blood borne parasite
  • Pregnant or history of pregnancy
  • Has had a splenectomy

Donation Process

Blood is collected from the jugular vein in the neck. Your dog will receive a small shave and the area will be cleaned before the procedure. During the 10-minute collection process, your dog will lie comfortably on a table and receive praise and pets. No sedation is used.

Afterward, a temporary bandage will be applied, and your dog will receive treats, food, and a toy.

Dogs weighing at least 40 pounds can donate a half pint every 4-6 weeks, and dogs weighing over 50 pounds can donate a pint every 8 weeks.

Benefits for Canine Blood Donors

  • Free annual exams, bloodwork and vaccinations
  • Free heartworm, flea and tick preventative
  • Free bag of dog food and treats with each donation
  • One unit of blood saved for each unit donated, should your dog ever need it
